The Island of Aegina
For every mentioned activity, you can find a link in every title with google maps directions.

It is not by mistake that the TasteAtlas ranks the Greek cuisine the second best in the world, only 0.03 points from the top. And it’s not by mistake either that one of the best rated foods is the Fistiki Aeginas (Aegina Pistachio).
On the island of Aegina one has the opportunity to eat food that makes God ask for more. Dishes range from local delicacies, to general Greek dishes, and of course the famous Souvlaki!
Here is where we think it would be best to eat in Aegina.
Port of Aegina/Aegina Center
Mavros gatos – Souvlaki
Looking for authentic, old school souvlaki in Aegina? Mavros Gatos is one of those souvlaki restaurants that appreciate the original, good traditional souvlaki, with a taste that evokes memories and unforgettable times. Mavros Gatos has the reputation of one of the best traditional Soublaki shops on the island!
Sti FouFou – Meat Grill and Souvlaki
Sti Fou Fou opened its doors in February 2018 and within a few weeks managed to become a favourite by the locals.
Meat straight from the grill with handmade sauces, stews that are sold out by the early evening and even if you are in the mood for spaghetti (lasagne, noodles, macaroni, etc.), you can also have that! Everything is handmade, produced by the owners of the shop.
And of course, tasty, juicy Souvlaki, with any choice of ingredients you wish!
Nautical Club of Aegina – Seafood and Meze
The Nautical Club of Aegina (NOA in greek) one can enjoy Mediterranean cuisine at its best, fresh fish and seafood, dishes of the day, but also traditional Greek cuisine, always with excellent service. Meat lovers will enjoy dishes of the moment, such as juicy steaks, but also delicious stews, from braised and lemony veal to cock in wine.
To maridaki – Fish Meze and Tsipouro
At Maridaki you will taste traditional dishes, big and small fish from the fishermen of Aegina, but also delicious pot dishes, for which Maridaki is famous. We strongly recommend the octopus with baked macaroni and the orzo with shrimps. But it also goes without saying that whatever the chef suggests from the fish of the day is always a good option!
Agios Vasileios
Manitas, On the Shore – Meat, Fish, And amazing wine
Just a moment away from the church where the wedding will take place, Manitas serves some of the best food on the island! At Manitas you can find well-cooked Greek recipes, juicy grilled meats and imaginative seafood dishes, while there are also dishes for special diets (vegan, gluten free).
Evi, the owner of the restaurant, will be happy to serve you and make sure you left well fed and happy!
And don’t be afraid to name drop there, tell Evi that you are here because of Maria and Vasilis. She’s a good friend of ours.
Marathonas
Akrogialia – Seaside Tavern and café
Akrogialia can probably provide the best “eating next to the sea” experience on the island. Originally the shop was a beach bar, which is still operating, but with the passage of time has transformed to a proper tavern with a great selection of food.
Some of our favourites include the Meat Platter and the Shrimp Pasta.
Day or Night, Akrogialia has something for everyone. Come and have a cold brew coffee or a cocktail during the sunset for optimal experience.
Aegina is home to some amazing patisseries, which offer a great selection of sweets, specializing on locally produced sweets from pistachio, but not limiting themselves to it.
Here are some of our favourite patisseries on the island, right in the center of the City of Aegina!
Mourtzis: Pistachio based everything.
Mourtzis is the best pistachio seller in Aegina, with a history that goes back to the 60s. One can find both salty and sweet treats here, in combinations and preparations that are not available anywhere else in the whole world! And of course you can buy Pistachio with or without shell, and in different tastes, if you are up for this!
Aiakeion – Patisserie Café
Aiakeion is probably the most historical café in town, operating since 1958 and having been awarded multiple awards from international competitions. You might be tempted to taste their whole selection from the menu, and no one would blame you if you did.
So come to Aiakeion, order a cold coffee, eat a sweet, and enjoy the amazing view of the port of Aegina. It’s just right!
Melenio – Ice cream shop with an attitude
The sweets at Melenio are all handmade, of their own production, which explains why Melenio has conquered the hearts of the people and visitors of Aegina.
Try the handmade ice cream that is daily made with fresh milk, and if you are a fan of chocolate, you will find it in Melenio in many ways to choose. You should also try small traditional sweets the shop offers
Pagoudis – Traditional Syrup Based Desserts
Pagoudis focuses more on traditional sweets, and mainly traditional Greek syrup based pan sweets like baklava, galaktoboureko, and kataifi. All of their assortment is hand made and freshly made.
Do visit and try as much as you like! The calories are worth it!
A visit to Aegina without visiting one of the hundreds pristine amazing beaches would be a shame. It’s as if you have reached a water spring at the top of the mountain, but you don’t drink water from it.
Here you will find some of our favourite beaches and beach clubs.
Marathonas – Akrogialia
You may have spotted Akrogialia in the Food Section as well. If you did you probably noticed that Akrogialia started out as a beach club, and then expanded to a Café and Tavern.
The beach that Akrogialia serves is always clean and well maintained, with really beautiful thatched umbrellas and chaise longues with pillows that will make anyone order a Mojito and just get in the mood for some summertime relaxing.
And don’t be afraid to jump right from the beach to eating a meze from Akrogialia! They will serve you right on the beach if you so like, or on one of their tables.
Marathonas – Bocampo Beach Bar
Bocampo lies on one of the famous Marathonas bays with shallow waters, ideal for families for endless hours of safe play in the water. Of course, the beach is organized with a toilet, shower and changing rooms for even greater comfort.
This beach bar is loved by all because of its free style and its prices. At Bocampo Beach Bar’s entrance you will find its characteristic, island-style bar where you can enjoy coffee, drinks, refreshments, snacks, ice creams, but also food – sandwiches, salads and burgers are a must.
Agios Vasileios – Aqua Loca Beach Bar
Aqua Loca Beach Bar is situated no more than 100 meters away from the church where the wedding will take place, in the beautiful area of Agios Vasileios. In contrast to the other beach bars, Aqua Loca tends to keep its style more natural and bohemian.
Thatched umbrelas, old school chaise longues, and even small teepee tents are available for you to enjoy the amazing waters of Agios Vasileios.
The beach is pet friendly, and the owners and employees are always happy to help you enjoy your stay!
Everywhere – Literally Everywhere
We are sure that you have already noticed that Aegina is an island, and islands are surrounded by the sea. Swimming is allowed everywhere on the island, with minimal exceptions of restricted areas that you would not be able to get there anyway!
On the map below you can find some of the best areas you can do some free form swimming, as well as some notes for each. Look for the bold red lines across the coast of the island. Bring your umbrella, towel, and have your swimming trunks already worn, because it’s all free baby! Enjoy this majestic island!
Just like very other place in Greece, Aegina is full of sights to see! From ancient temples, to nature reserves, Aegina has something fore everyone!
Did you know that Aegina was the first capital of Greece?!
Temple of Aphaia
The Temple of Athena Aphaia in Aegina: The Temple of Aphaia has been dedicated to goddess Athena and is located on the island of Aegina, on top of a hill. This is one of the ancient architectural wonders of ancient Greece. It was built in 480 BC and 25 of the original 32 Doric columns still stand due to the skill of the restorers. It is situated in a Sanctuary complex in Aegina about 13 km east of the main port.
Temple of Apollo
The temple of Apollo is placed to the north of Aegina town, on a small hill overlooking the port. It is one of the first sights you see when you arrive at the port. In our days, the site of the temple, as well as its surroundings is open to the public, and there is a gate from the Archaeological Museum that leads to its remains.
The temple of Apollo is also known as Kolona, meaning column, because just one column remains today from this ancient construction. It dates from the 6th century BC, even earlier than the Parthenon in Athens. Constructed in the Doric architectural style, it is believed that it had 11 columns on the sides and 6 columns on the ends.
Island of Moni (F/B to Moni)
Moni is located south-west side of Aegina, opposite Perdika village. Moni is a great place for sailing and excursions, as it counts on great turquoise waters and lush nature. The island is not inhabited, as there is no drinkable water. The only inhabitants are some animals and, in particular, some deers, kri-kri goats brought from Crete and falcons!
If you visit the island, it would be a good idea to take drinkable water and food with you. To get to Moni, you can take a boat from Perdika village. The itineraries are regular in the summer months and the trip takes about 10 minutes.
Aegina Tower of Markellos
The Tower of Markellos constitutes a landmark of Aegina island and is an edifice of major historical significance. Located near the center of the main town, this impressive pink edifice catches the eye of the visitor with its Venetian architectural style and imposing facade.
The building’s major significance lies in its leading role in the political developments before and after the Greek Revolution of 1821. During the war, the tower used to host many important figures, such as activists and politicians, Greek and foreign alike. After Greece became a free state, Aegina was declared the newly-founded country’s capital and the tower of Markellos was turned into the residence of the Governor Ioannis Kapodistrias from 1828 to 1829. Later on, it hosted the State Treasury as well as many other ministers.
Agios Nektarios Monastery
Aegina is home to the largest Monastery in the Balkan Region, Agios Nektarios. The Monastery is the most important religious monument of Aegina, located 6 km from the center of Aegina Town. The monastery was founded by the Bishop of Pentapolis Nektarios.
Inside the monastery, there are two small chapels which actually host the tomb and holy relics of Agios Nektarios. His cell which was his home is found behind the two chapels and it is open to the public. Today 14 nuns live in the Monastery of Agios Nektarios. Close to the Monastery there is an imposing church, dedicated to the Saint. The church has two high bell towers and four series of windows, all covered with red bows. Following the steps up, there is the church of Holy Trinity.
Archaeological Site of Palaiochora of Aegina
More than two hundred years have passed since the people of Aegina left the safety of the fortified hill of Paliachora to go down to the port again, free from pirate raids, ready to build the new city of Aegina from scratch.
The location was ideal not only because the hill was naturally a fortress, but also because it allowed the people of Aegina to have complete oversight of the entire Saronic Gulf. At the same time, the settlement that was created remained invisible in a way, thanks to the technique and materials used in the construction of the houses!
Paliachora, “The Alamo of Aegina”, has stood in ruins and shrouded in an eerie silence ever since. With its unique beauty, it captivates any hiker who wanders along its stone paths and cross the grassy threshold of its Medieval churches with delight.
There is no Greek Vacation without experiencing the nightlife, and Aegina is no stranger to it!
While there are multitudes of places you can visit, especially in the city centre, the following are our favourites!
Remvi All Day Bar
Whatever you need, Remvi has it! From lustful breakfasts, with omelets and toasts, coffee and juices, to amazing lunches and bites, and in the night the most amazing handmade cocktails!
When it comes to coffee, people talk about Remvi’s “perfectly-made” espresso and cappuccino from early in the morning until 22:30 at night. Oh, yes, you can take your coffee with you to the beach and actually anywhere! Why not combine it with a hike from the Sights in the sightseeing section?
And as far as cocktails are concerned, they are all homemade with 100% natural ingredients – all fruits (or fruit puree), syrups etc are made from original fruit (frosted during their season of fruition) and then are being added to the respective cocktails producing exotic and mouth-watering flavours…
Ellinikon Seaside
But when an all day bar is not enough and you need to really let it all out, it’s time to visit Ellinikon Seaside!
Ellinikon Seaside music club is operating in Aegina since 1992. If you know it, it’s sure you already love it. If you do not know it, you will fall in love with it at first sight!
